Encrypted Text: Leveling a rogue, level 11-50

Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the rogue class. This week, we talk about leveling a rogue from level 11 to level 50. As we discussed in the comments last week, rogues play fairly simple for the first several levels. Without any real finesse techniques and the simplest of opponents, there’s no reason to do anything besides run up to an enemy and just start swinging away. It may not seem very rogue-like in nature, but that is because low level rogues are still learning the tricks of the trade. The trip from 11 to 50 will be much of the same. We receive a few awesome new abilities that help us in a few situations, but until level 50, we don’t really see any of rogue that you can expect to play at 80. Luckily, at 50, you get a completely new skill set that will rewrite how you play your rogue. With the mount changes to allow low levels to ride epic mounts, you’ll be jetting around and having a great time questing and finding enemies to slay. Let’s not

[1.Local]: PUGgin’ for money and emblems for free

Reader comments — ahh, yes, the juicy goodness following a meaty post. [1.Local] ducks past the swinging doors to see what readers have been chatting about in the back room over the past week. ElderDruid doesn’t think we’ll be working too hard for our gold and our emblems in 3.3. ElderDruid: Look at them yo-yo’s, that’s the way you do it You PUG for money on the 3.3 That ain’t workin’, that’s the way you do it PUGgin for money and emblems for free Now that’s just profit, that’s the way you do it Let me tell you, them guys ain’t dumb Gonna keep subscribers with the epic carrot Keep ‘em till the launch of Cataclysm. Patch 3.3 PTR: Festergut impressions

I cleared out the tail end of my afternoon in the hopes of getting a glimpse at the latest raid boss to be tested in the patch 3.3 PTR. Festergut was open for testing on North American servers while the European servers had Rotface. There were some issues with Rotface earlier in the day (namely that the 25 man version of Rotface had health that was meant for the 10 man). Anyway, I managed to get in a few attempts on Festergut here while playing on my priest. First, let’s talk trash. Gallery: Icecrown Citadel   Zoning in, you’ll see the Ashen Verdict (which I assume is the new faction pairing the Ebon Blade and Argent Crusade forces together) with a forward command post on the bottom floor of Icecrown. Tirion and his boys are standing by holding down the fort here while your forces are slowly infiltrating Icecrown. There’s a teleporter right at the entrance. Festergut is located in the Plagueworks section of the citadel. After you step off the teleporter and step forward a bit, you’ll be greeted by an extremely vast chasm. The whole place feels very

AddOn Spotlight: ThatJustHappened

AddOn Spotlight takes a look at the little bits of Lua and XML that make our interfaces special. From bar mods to unit frames and beyond, if it goes in your AddOns folder, we’ll cover it here. For those of you who have ever tried to macro together a message with a skill, you know that it can sometimes be awkward. The skill might still be on cooldown and the macro sends the message anyways. Other times, you decide mid-cast to change your mind, but the message already went off. If you’re raiding, this can cause a lot of problems as the macro might announce you’re putting up your shield wall, but you really didn’t. Some class or role specific addons exist out there for helping out with this purpose, but the free form ones are few and far between. ThatJustHappened (sorry, WoWInterface doesn’t have a copy of it) by belleboom is an addon that can help with this type of thing. Much like Power Auras, it allows you to setup custom warnings and messages when conditions are met. The main thing is its ability to ’spam’ messages across party, raid,

Patch 3.3 PTR: Shadow Priest buffs galore in build 10571

Oh, Blizzard. Why? Why must you torment me so? I stood by Shadow Priests for so long, so very long. I debated their numbers, mechanics and playstyle until my fingers stopped functioning. I picked apart combat logs and damage/healing charts for hours and hours, trying to get the absolute most out of my talent spec. Then I just grew tired. I’m not ashamed to admit that it broke me. I’m not ashamed that I decided to switch to raiding on my Retribution Paladin last month. I’m a man, I can own up to what I’ve done. But your torment continues! You were waiting for just this moment to buff the unholy crap out of Shadow Priests, weren’t you? You were waiting for my patience to run out. And that’s enough melodrama for now. Let’s actually break down the new changes on the PTR, shall we? Shadowform: This talent also now causes Devouring Plague, Shadow Word: Pain, and Vampiric Touch to benefit from haste. Both the period length and the duration of these spells will be reduced by haste. In addition, the mana cost has been reduced from 32% to 13% of

The Colosseum: Trendz of Hyjal

The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator (Brutal, Vengeful, Merciless, and otherwise), to interview some of the top arena fighters in the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Frostwyrms. We’re especially focused on the people who play these games, to further shed light on the world of the PvP player. There haven’t been many warlocks interviewed in the history of the Colosseum. We were very excited to sit down with Trendz of Hyjal today to discuss a myriad of arena related topics and personal history. Vanquisher Trendz is currently holding down the #1 spots in both 3v3 and 5v5 on the US-Whirlwind battlegroup. His 3v3, Rival Thilaume, a wizard cleave (two spell dps casters + healer) and his 5v5, Last Game Moms Calling makes Trendz the highest ranking warlock on US-Whirlwind, even though he has no 2v2. Take a look at what Trendz had to say after the break! WoW.com: Hi Trendz, good to have you with us. Let’s start out by asking some basic

The Queue: Can’t get enough pony

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com’s (almost) daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today. I’m taking a break from piecing together the video from WoW.com’s recent run of the Forge of Souls to whip up a brand new edition of The Queue for you guys to read this afternoon. I went to Twitter for most of today’s questions, so don’t be surprised if they’re pretty short! AngerFork asked… “Theory time: Since Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep are coming back as Heroics, do you think any other dungeons will come back as Heroics? If so, which?” I don’t think there will be many more, if any at all, when Cataclysm launches. I figure they’re turning these into Heroics for one of two reasons. One, they’re updating them to reflect current events in the world. Or two, they’re just scaling them up to level 85 so newer players understand the background of current events. Someone who first leveled up in Wrath of the Lich King, or even
