Arcane Brilliance: What Cataclysm will mean to Mages, part 2

Welcome to the latest edition of Arcane Brilliance, the weekly Mage column and internet meeting place for IHATEWARLOCKS. If you can’t remember what that acronym stands for, you can check last week’s column, about two paragraphs from the end. If you can’t be bothered, it doesn’t matter. The name says it all, really. When I was growing up, way back at the dawn of time, in the late eighties, I didn’t have access to a lot of games. It wasn’t like it is now, where I have an unplayed backlog of quality electronic entertainment so deep my house reeks of shrinkwrap and unfulfilled potential. No, back then, I remember saving my pennies for an entire summer with an eye on getting a new game, then going to the game store and having a choice between Lufia and 7th Saga. I chose 7th Saga (mostly because you could be a robot in that one), and even though time hasn’t been particularly kind to that game, it still holds a special place in my heart. You know why? Because I played it. I played the crap out of it, and when I finished it, I started over and

Around Azeroth: Original buttery flavor

With rumors of an oncoming cataclysm spreading through the cities of Azeroth, many residents have begun making plans for whatever may come. Valhalla of Spirestone has used his powers of light to create a waterproof, earthquake-proof, magic-proof crystal bomb shelter. He’ll be able to survive any catastrophe, as long as he remembers to create some air holes. And the inside is made of delicious buttered popcorn-flavor rock candy! Actually … not delicious. Ew. Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next! Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word “Azeroth” in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing — use alt-Z to

The Colosseum: Dynlor and Domustie

The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator (Brutal, Vengeful, Merciless, Furious, and otherwise), to interview some of the top Arena fighters in the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Frostwyrms. We’re especially focused on the people who play these games, to further shed light on the world of the PvP player. One of the challenges in presenting Arena each week is that it “takes two to tango.” (Or, for that matter, it takes two to waltz, rhumba, and even a whole lot more to square dance.) As we get a chance, we try and look at several different angles to Arena competition. This week, we’re able to look at two members of the exact same team, Uh Oh Polio. Dynlor is the team’s Paladin, while Domustie is the team’s Druid. Check out what they had to say after the cut.         WoW.com: Who are your teammates right now? Dynlor: I’m Dynlor, a Prot-specced DPS Paladin. I’ve been playing with Ickz (a Fan of Knives

Stormrage novel cover art revealed

This isn’t the biggest news in the world, but for those of you that really dig World of Warcraft’s extended universe, it might be pretty exciting. Medievaldragon over at BlizzPlanet has an incredibly hi-res picture of the artwork that will grace the cover of the upcoming novel Stormrage, courtesy of Pocket Books. I can’t help but notice Malfurion’s rather feral appearance there. Despite how much Blizzard loves the whole “falling from grace” thing for their characters, I somewhat doubt they will take that road with Malfurion, even with everything going on in the Emerald Dream.* Is he stalking some prey? Is he running from whatever gave him those scars? Is he pissed that Tyrande went Shadow and made him respec Resto, hence the foliage? Who knows, but I’m curious to find out, even if my least favorite Warcraft novelist is tackling this one. Maybe we’ll get an excerpt to read in our swag bags at BlizzCon? We can hope, right? *If they do, I assume it will be temporary. Chris Metzen seems awfully attached to Malfurion when he talks about

[1.Local]: Speaking of patch week chatter

Reader comments — ahh, yes, the juicy goodness following a meaty post. [1.Local] ducks past the swinging doors to see what readers have been chatting about in the back room over the past week. Patch week? Oh, yeah. Speaking of patch week, we all knew that patch week was going to be rough. We knew there would be delays, and bugs, and restarts, and false starts. We knew that hardcore players would gripe, that newbies would be confused and that there would be plenty of contentious debate from all sides. What we didn’t know is that we could be caught unaware by even geek crafts. Take it from mibluvr13, who took one look at the baby Hordie shirt featured in this week’s World of WarCrafts column and began groping for the Escape key. “Ooooh, god,” mibluvr13 moaned. “I never thought WoW.com would punch me in the biological clock. BRB, having a kid.” The week in reader comments, through the bleary eyes of our punch-drunk, patch-distracted readers, after the break. The next level of questing Quests – they work pretty much the same way as they

Patch 3.2 Known Issues

Dresorull has just released a list of known issues (unfixed bugs) in Patch 3.2. This patch has its fair share of bugs in it, however from personal experience I think it has a ways to go before it reaches the bugginess level of the patch 3.0.x branch. This laundry list of issues comes after yesterday’s first round of in-game hot fixes. Based on previous patches, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another round of hot fixes released tonight. Some of the more major bugs in patch 3.2 that are on Dresorull’s list include: People are getting stuck in the portals to the Argent Coliseum raids. The Flying Carpet requires 410 tailoring to craft when only 375 is attainable at level 60. A number of items are displaying different textures in 3.2.0 from how they looked in 3.1.3. Master’s Inscription of the Crag has not had its MP5 value increased. Some Stormjewels are still unique-equip. Again, these are just current bugs in the patch. These issues have not been fixed yet. The full list of known issues after the break. The full list of patch 3.2 known issues (so far) is

Officers’ Quarters: Crushed by the banhammer

Every Monday Scott Andrews contributes Officers’ Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership. I enjoy the process of leveling as much as anyone else. I like the feeling of accomplishment in leveling, and the gradual growth of power that comes with it. Blizzard has given us a variety of tools to speed up the leveling process, including heirloom items and the Recruit-a-Friend service. Even so, I can understand why some players just want to skip to the endgame. To some people, questing on a low-level character is a lot less interesting than raiding or PvPing at the level cap. In order to skip the leveling process, your options are both limited and dangerous. You could pay a leveling service. However, some of these services are actually scam artists who will use your account info to sell everything you have and take all your stuff. You could ask a friend to log in and level for you. However, sharing your account information can get your account banned. Finally, you could just buy an account. Let’s see how that turned out for one particular guild
